FLAT SPACE / SPATIU DESCHIS

location: Chisinau

date: 2009-03-25
info:

FLAT SPACE for mObile gallery / 2008-09
A project for the public space for the city of Chisinau designed by Stefan Rusu

The point of departure for the FLAT SPACE space conceived for the mObile gallery project (in the frame of CHIOŞC project) was the interest for the private space limited by socialist society standards, which still represents a strong visual element of contemporary urban and social landscape of the city of Chisinau.

The FLAT SPACE is a functional replica of an apartment that comprises the basic components of a typical socialist habitat: the kitchen, the bathroom, the living room and the balcony. The transparency is an important feature of the project since the apartment has no external walls (with the exception of the façade) and it will function as an open space for public presentations and cultural activities. The elements of the apartment are suggested and marked as a technical sketch depicted directly on its floor (see the plan-image 3).

The wall creating two rooms designated for public presentations separates the FLAT SPACE. The rooms will host the projects realized in Chisinau by the artists selected for the mObile gallery artist in residence program. The wall will function as a screen during the presentations.

The FLAT SPACE has 2 main functions:

1.The interior of the FLAT SPACE will function as an open space and interdisciplinary platform (see the side façade-image 1), where Oberliht Young Artist Association will organize public programs and visual art events including public readings, performances, public talks, book launches, film projections among others.

2. The main façade of the FLAT SPACE features a piece of a socialist flat building with a balcony that will host a info-point (see the main façade-image 2) in charge of dissemination of information/publications related to contemporary art practices and other cultural events.
